Magic Potion

Magic Potion is completed.  These are all mushroom novelty fabrics that I'd been collecting for a while.  I'll be using it during October with some witchy seasonal decorations.  Lorenzo and Lucci LOVE special decorations and foods, and I enjoy obliging them!

I've decided not to start the North Pole project I was considering.  An applique project of that scope should have more concentration and commitment than I'm interested in offering at this time.  So back to the drawing board for a different new project.  I'm feeling a bit discouraged this year -- this is supposed to be a quilting blog, but I'm doing so little quiltmaking these days.

Monday + RSC: August - Orange

Just finished up a five day stretch of babysitting.  I adore those boys but they are exhausting, and the house looks like a tornado hit.  Leo is 11 months old, and into EVERYTHING.  One more weird-summer-schedule week ahead, and then the big guys are back to school and all will settle down to 'normal', which is wacko anyway but at least more predictable.

Not a minute for sewing when they're here, but after I picked up and settled down today, I spent a couple of hours out in the studio.  I've decided to do a very simple design for the mushroom fabrics that will showcase the novelty prints.  I'd envisioned it looking more RSC - ORANGE but oh well.  I do like the mushroom prints!

Friday and maybe RSC

It's been a distracted few months.  I'm trying to get myself interested in quilt making again -- I haven't been very creative this summer, and I miss that in my days.  The RSC color for August is orange, so I'm **thinking about** working on a project for October:  mushrooms, magic potions.  We'll see ...

Haha, just thought of this: when I was in elementary school, I used to get checkmarks on my report cards about "Uses Time Profitably", meaning I didn't, I wasted time and didn't focus.  So I'll call this fabric pull an effort to Use My Time Profitably 😉

I get two points for this one!

Another completion! I'm counting this in both the UFO and the RSC categories: it came from a set of Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks that had been curing for several years.  Done!

RSC22: March yellow/gold

Just working my way through the usual lineup of RSC blocks using the sunshiney color range of yellow/gold.

I have almost enough of these 9ps to be done with them -- I need to count up all the colors and finalize this block set.

Log cabins are always successful.  Probably my favorite quilt block.

These churns work up pretty quickly.

RSC22: February - teal/aqua

Finishing up February RSC with the blocks that use the tiniest scraps and bits.

I'm settled into a good routine for RSC22, making 2 different block types per week. I begin the month with the blocks that use the largest scraps, and work my way down to the smallest bits by the end of the month.

RSC22: February - teal

Getting started on RSC February/teal + aqua, although I don't seem to have much in the way of aqua in the scrap basket.

Just a few teal 6" 9ps -- I didn't need many to fill in this area on my 9-patch layout diagram.  I have well over 100 blocks in this collection already.

And a couple of classic log cabins.

RSC22: January - red

I'm going back to the basics with RSC this year: just using the little scraps from my toss basket rather than going into stash and cutting new fabric. And I'm challenging myself to consume ALL the small pieces that are available.  We're at the final week of January, and since I still had a few red odds and ends left, I resurrected a couple more RSC quilt ideas that were successful for me in the past.

I made some tessellating L blocks that use 2 1/2" strips.

I'll end up with a bright quilt like this one I made years ago.

And then finally some tiny bowtie blocks that use the small squares left from the L blocks.

It'll take a while for me to have enough of these small blocks to recreate my long-ago bowtie quilt.

These last two block sets have finally depleted the red scraps from my basket, and eventually I'll have eight rainbow quilts.  I'm looking forward to next month's color, teal/aqua.

RSC22: January - red

I'm trying a new block this year for RSC -- here's an inspiration photo for a 'pennants' quilt.  I'll be calling my version 'prayer flags' because the world needs all the prayers it can get. (!!!)

I'll be using up tiny odd scraps to create fabric large enough to accommodate the triangles.  I'm using a Tri Recs template that I already had, and a white-on-white background, yardage from my stash. My blocks will be 6".

My goal is approximately108 blocks (for a 9 x 12 layout), or whenever the background fabric runs out. I'm not going to start connecting the triangles into rows until I get some color variety.

RSC22: January - red

Working with red strips and strings this week.  I started with the longest strips and made some classic log cabins.  These ae 12", so I only need 48 blocks to make a comfortable-size lap quilt.

Then I did some rails with the shorter length leftovers.
These are 5" blocks.  No goal in mind, just consuming strips.

And finally, some 4" squares with the shortest ones.  I'll be using the squares as star centers in 8" sawtooth blocks.

The string stars will be a redo of this RSC stars quilt I made a long time ago.

RSC22: January - red

Another year of Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  We are beginning with RED as our focus color for January.  I have quite a few ideas for block sets this year -- we'll see how far my scraps and my time can stretch each month.

I'll be starting each month's color by completing the target number of 9-patch blocks necessary to fill the layout in my sketch.  This is a carryover project from last year and needs 225 blocks.  I already had 35 red blocks on hand, and I made 7 more this month, so now I'm done making red 9ps for this block set.

This week I also made three 9" Churn Dash blocks which feature red 1800s fabrics.  I have an overwhelming excess of 1800s fabrics, and this project won't even begin to make a dent in it.

I made a similar RSC quilt some years ago, so this new one will be Churns 2.0.  I'll be aiming for 35 blocks for this set.

I'll have more RSC activity to share next week.  Meanwhile, find more RED scraps to enjoy at
