Busy week -- very little sewing accomplished.   I did spend a few minutes one afternoon with RSC, sewing up some purple string segments.

I kind of fizzled out with green, the RSC March color.  The challenge color for April is purple, and coincidentally I'm already puttering with this block set -- must be karma!   These lotto blocks from long ago will become a purplish donation quilt.

RSC23: March - green

This week's effort with RSC23: March - green:

I started by piecing a few leaf blocks -- my idea here is some kind of ivy vine layout but still thinking.  And I'll need many more green leaf blocks ... a lukewarm commitment at this point.

And then a few green string chunks to add to a collection of similar ones from previous months.  These will be accumulated into a striped or basketweave arrangement someday.

RSC23: March - green

And here we are in March already!  

The RSC challenge color for this month is green.

I pulled out all the green odds and ends from my scrap basket.

I started by cutting some 5" squares.

 Then I sewed up some 4ps using pieces that were too small to become 5" squares.

And I set aside 'string' edges and ends.

Now that my organizing is done, I'm ready to think about a green project for the month.

RSC23: February - pink

 

RSC23: February - pink

I got to 'flimsy' stage with my pink log cabin blocks.  I ended up with a sweet classic little nap-size quilt, destined to be a donation quilt eventually.  This is the finale of February/pink RSC for me, not as much to show for the month as I'd hoped.  My heart's kind of not into it anymore.

So when I calculate scraps into yardage and add allocations for a back and binding, this project only consumed about 4 yards of fabric -- not nearly enough to make a difference with my goal of stash reduction.  Even though I no longer purchase quantities of fabric like I did in the past, I have a huge collection, and at this rate of consumption it will continue to be an enormous amount for many years.  Sigh.

I made very little progress with my pink log cabin blocks this week.  Since this is just going to be a donation quilt, unknown destination, I decided to stop at lap size.  I need to select some border fabric next.

RSC23: February - pink

A discombobulated week -- some medical distractions (which are now resolved), and also some home maintenance problems that required an electrician. ($$) 

So: not as much progress with PINK as I would have hoped, but anyway better than nothing.

I made three more pink log cabin blocks this week.  Log cabins are my all-time favorite quilt blocks -- piecing them is soothing, and the results are classic.  I've sewn several dozen log cabin quilts through the years.

  

I also completed my target 35 blocks for the Easter project.  It's not strictly pink, but it does include some pink and it's certainly scrappy so I'm including it :)

RSC23: February - pink

New month -- new color!  I'm pleased with pink as the February challenge color, cheerier than January's dark blue.

To get the ball rolling, here are some recent Grandmother's Choice blocks which include pink parts.  These are just a few of the blocks I've been piecing using the bright springy fabrics I pulled out last week for an Eastertime project.  This block set is off to a good start!

Next, I skimmed a pile of 1800s-style pink scraps and FQs off the top of my overflowing pink storage tub and started cutting them down into 5" squares.  They will become 'nickel' quilts eventually, design yet to be selected from a Pat Speth book.   This is how I began RSC last month too, making the fabric pieces smaller and more approachable. 😏  In particular, I'll be trying to reduce the excessive amount of 1800s/Civil War-style fabric in my stash throughout this year.   

 

As far as actually consuming pink scraps, when I cut the bigger squares I also end up with 2 1/2" squares and 1 1/2" strips.  This week the strips inspired me to work on some log cabin blocks.  I'll be aiming for 24 blocks total here.

RSC23 January - blue

I persevered and finished piecing my third set of blue scrap blocks for January.  These blocks will become a donation quilt.  They will probably get sashing later, but for now I'm going to just let them hang and start thinking about the February color challenge: pink. I'm really ready to move on from dark blue!!

I spent a little time with the 2 1/2" square basket this week -- used up most of the odd blue squares.

Several sets of blue-plus-another-color subunits completed, to be used in Arlington Square blocks in the future.

This is a nice scrappy design from Pat Speth's NICKEL QUILTS.  I like the convenience of her nickel square patterns.

I made some progress this week with the 5" blue squares I was cutting -- they've become blocks, and a top is coming along.  

The quilt is not looking nearly as blue as I'd expected, but I'm heading in the right direction for my color inspiration photo.  I'll still think about borders, but so far, so good.  This will eventually become a donation quilt.

RSC23: January - blue

A new start with Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2023!  Amazingly, this is my 11th year of RSC.  One of my major goals this year is to significantly downsize my fabric stash -- not just via RSC, but also with donations and discards -- and I'm off and running!  

Scrap prep this week: our color assignment for January RSC is dark/bright blue.  I started by pulling out some odds and ends of blues and spent an afternoon scrap cutting.  I'm accumulating 5" squares and 1 1/2" strips.  I have my eye on some possible projects in Pat Speth's Nickel Quilts books and plan to use the 5" squares that way.  The strips will be used for log cabin and rail fence type blocks.  I also found that I needed a separate basket for 2 1/2" squares (ends too small to make it into the 5" collection), and a strings (strips less than 1 1/2") pile on the back corner of the worktable.    Any leftovers smaller than these will be discarded.

And for a change of pace from cutting, I started sewing up some HSTs.  More blue action to come!
