Mission accomplished!

As I planned, these two Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts are now quilted, bound, packed and on their way to WRAP A SMILE!

RSC19

These two block sets were launched as RSC19 projects at the beginning of this year.  They are 'Northern Lights'  blocks from Pat Speth's Nickel Quilts book.  Right from the get-go, I decided to separate the blocks into warm and cool sets.

I pulled them out yesterday to see where things stood, and discovered I only needed to make three more blocks for each set to complete the 5 x 7 layouts.  Jake did some quality-control testing but he wasn't able to choose a colorway preference. 

At the beginning of the year, when I first started these block sets, it was my intention to make two larger quilts with borders.  But as it happens, these two tops are exactly the requested size for Wrap-A-Smile donation quilts just as they are now, so there we have it: done.  They will be expedited through the quilting and binding queues, and will hopefully be sent out by the beginning of December.  I'm very pleased with the color statements these two tops are making!

 

I still have two more RSC block sets going, Dawn to Dusk and Burgoyne Surrounded, but I'm planning to roll them over into next year.

Blue crumbs

I'm on a roll here -- third binding finished this week!

This crumb quilt was started last year and has been worked on sporadically this year -- finally made it to the finish line.  It will be a donation quilt.

I must say, it feels good to get another one out of the basket and done!!  By my reckoning, I still have eight or nine tops in the to-be-finished line-up, and then probably at least another dozen UFOs in various stages of non-completion.

RSC19: August - purple

Although the official RSC color this month is light blue, I chose to work ahead on my purple blocks for August.  Here are my latest Burgoyne Surrounded blocks.

I'm calling them 'purple' because the large rectangles are purple, but they're really as much rainbow-y as they are 'purple.'  Color placement beyond the large focal point rectangles is random and bright.

The block set is growing.  I like making these and will probably roll this project over into next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

RSC19: August - purple

I'm doing purple as my RSC color this month instead of light blue, because I had sewn ahead, and we are on the road for several weeks.

Purple Northern Lights blocks 

From month to month, all the cool-toned Northern Lights blocks have been pieced using the same pale green background.  This time I'm adding the purples to the accumulating block set.  I'll only need a few more to make a nice 'cool-toned' donation quilt.

RSC19: August - purple

August's assigned RSC color is actually light blue, but I'm going with purple this month instead.  I had some of my purple blocks already sewn, and nothing at all done in light blue, so here we are.

I missed orange during the month of May, so I will need to circle back and catch up with that color.  I'm getting close to enough blocks for a donation quilt here.

RSC19: July - PINK

New month, new Rainbow Scrap Challenge color -- we'll be working with PINK during July.

I didn't have a chance to spend much time with my pink scraps this week.  The only thing I accomplished was this group of Northern Lights blocks.

They will be added to my 'warm' set of Northern Lights blocks, which is well on the way toward being enough for a donation quilt.

RSC19: June - Blue

Wrapping up RSC19 - BLUE

So the other day I was rummaging through a closet, looking for a particular length of fabric … and instead I happened upon this bundle:

It's a set of crumb blocks from a couple of years ago, with associated BLUE sashing, and yardage for a BLUE polka-dot back, and even some already-cut binding.  Not sure why this had lapsed into UFO-dom, but since it's RSC BLUE month, it seemed like a good time to resurrect it.  Assembling it became a pleasant afternoon's work -- a bright quilt top for sure!

And now it's progressed from "bundle of blocks" status to "top with designated backing and binding" status.  In due time, it will become a donation quilt.

My To-Be-Quilted laundry basket has become quite full.  I need to start working on a few of these tops.

RSC19: June - BLUE

This week's RSC progress: Burgoyne Surrounded blocks.  Although they are multicolored, I'm calling them 'blue' because both the backgrounds and the prominent center rectangles include dark blue.

With 97 pieces per block, they do take a while.  They're not difficult at all -- no triangles!! -- but they require a bit of time.  I'm going to need plenty more of these primary-tone blocks before I get anywhere near a quilt :)

I also sewed up some blue HSTs.  Several possibilities for these, to be determined.

RSC19: June - BLUE

This week's RSC BLUE blocks are 'Northern Lights' blocks

from Pat Speth's book, Nickel Quilts.

  I've completed quite a collection of these blocks already this year, very rainbow-y :).  I'll be making two quilts from them, a 'warm' and a 'cool.'  I'm still looking forward to PINK RSC month to add to the 'warm' set, and PURPLE RSC month to round out the 'cool' set.

RSC19 June - blue

Another small step forward.

I pulled out some 5" squares and pieced up eight Dawn to Dusk blocks for RSC Blue.  This is literally the first time I've turned my sewing machine on since late April!  I'm behind with RSC, need to loop back around and pick up orange from last month, but there will be plenty of time to catch up.

Starting to feel more like ME again :)

Wednesday

I finished quilting and binding another UFO!  This was a 'red' project from January's Rainbow Scrap Challenge, and will be a donation quilt.  I continue to tidy and clear out the winter mess in my workroom.

RSC19: April - Aqua

An RSC April/aqua accomplishment: I got this aqua UFO quilted and bound this week as planned.

This project dates back to 2017, so it feels good to have it heading toward the finish line.  I just have to stitch the binding down to the back.  It will be a donation quilt.

This is probably the only aqua I will work on this month for RSC -- I'm only using primary colors for my 2019 block sets, so I'm off-duty this month for block piecing.  In any case my attention seems to be elsewhere.  Maybe it's spring fever.

The new RSC color for April is aqua/turquoise.

I'm going to get the aqua ball rolling with two appropriate UFOs.  Hoping to get both of these layered and quilted this month!

RSC19: March - green

This week I worked on my two GREEN Burgoyne Surrounded blocks for RSC19: March - Green.

These blocks have a lot of pieces, so they are slow, 

but not really difficult at all -- no triangles!

This block set is beginning to grow.  

Looks like I'm sticking to bright primary tones

 for these blocks.  I like it so far.

RSC19: March - green

I finished up this green-ish crib quilt this week -- it has a nice cozy flannel back.  This was the 'kit' that I dug out of the closet last week.  Simple crib quilts like this work up quickly, a nice change of pace from the more complicated projects I've been doing recently.  I didn't have a donation quilt completion last month, so this little quilt gets me back on track.

I also sewed up this month's green letterbox blocks.

RSC19: March - green

This month's quota of Northern Lights blocks

I have somewhere near 80 of these done already.

And here's a green project that just 

jumped right out of the closet at me!

Several years ago, when I was still selling quilts, I set up a group of baby quilt kits for myself.  The plan was to use up lots of 1930s-repro conversationals while making quilts to sell.   Each bundle had a selection of color-coordinated prints, a yard or so of contrast fabric, another half-yard for binding, and a length of flannel for the back.   At the time I made and sold quite a few similar baby quilts, but when my commitments changed the remaining bundles were tucked away undone.  And so, here's a nice green assortment, just waiting to turn into a crib quilt!  I have a simple 4-patch step arrangement in mind for these fabrics.

RSC19: March - green

New month, new color for Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  We're going to be working with GREEN this month.

I rummaged through my "toss" basket down on the floor next to my cutting table, and came up with a decent assortment of green scraps, mainly 1800s repros.  Enough to get me going, but I'll be looking for some green 1930s repro scraps later in the month also.

I also pulled out a bag of hunter green/forest green fabrics.  This group has been curing together for a loooong time -- most of them were acquired when my previous house was decorated in these cooler green colors, and I haven't lived in that house for more than 10 years :)  I'm thinking this month may be the opportunity to either use them or finally donate them onward.  

I sewed up some green Dawn to Dusk blocks

 this morning.

RSC19: February - yellow

Wow, it's the last weekend of February already, and RSC19: yellow is ending!  I finished up my yellow scraps for the month with a few LETTERBOX blocks.   I'll be looking forward to learning the March challenge color in a few days!

 Meanwhile, I am keeping up with Temecula Quilt Company's ONE BLOCK WEDNESDAY project -- we're up to 60 teeny little blocks here.  Doing just a couple a day, working in little nibbles instead of big bites :)

RSC19: February - yellow

My February quota of "Northern Lights" blocks. Since we're working with a warm RSC color this month, they required the already-designated yellow backgrounds.  (Cool RSC months will be getting green backgrounds.)  So the challenge here was to use yellow prints that were bright enough to stand up to the similar-hued backgrounds.
