RSC18: May - pink

I haven't worked on these Gardenvale Stars for a while.  Since they're the closest thing to "pink" that I have in the works, I decided to make a couple of blocks this week for RSC18: May - pink.  Tentatively aiming for 24 blocks with sashing, or 35 blocks without.

RSC18: April - yellow/gold

Our challenge color for RSC18 - April is yellow, a nice springtime choice.  I found several yellow/gold UFOs that I might spend time with this month:

I have the first row of Temecula Quilt Company's Little Letters.  This is a cute UFO,  more 'gold' than 'yellow', but it would be fairly quick to finish.

A set of 9-patch blocks that were supposed to become a strawberry-themed Disappearing 9-patch.  This was planned as a fairly large quilt ... will take a while.  Maybe just aim to get it to flimsy stage this month?

Some miscellaneous yellow blocks, all 30s-repro fabrics.  No plan at all for these, just a selection from
my orphan box.

So let's see where I get to with any of these by the end of the month ...

Plaid Rails

I'm having a very productive week!  This small UFO was layered and pinned last month, and today I got it quilted, and got the scrappy binding sewn around. 

It's actually an old Rainbow Scrap Challenge project -- an accumulation of homespun rail fence blocks in a variety of colors.  I have a more-than-25-years-worth plaid collection, and a small project like this doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.  This quilt will be gifted

to a friend.

RSC18: March - green

I finished assembling all the subunits I had started for Libby's MAGICAL MYSTERY.  I like the nine blocks I have so far -- the bright kiwi greens and orangey-melons are a pleasing color combo.  Makes me think of carrots :)  I'll continue to work on this but I got as far as I had planned to this month for RSC: March/green.

Angela has announced that the RSC color for April will be yellow/gold.  I dug out some sunshiny orphan blocks that I might be able to include in a yellow project for next month.

Magical Mystery/RSC18: March - green

This week's Magical Mystery clue used up the remaining parts we had cut, resulting in these little 4ps.

We have quite a collection of sub-units assembled now.  I've done enough to make 36 8" blocks.  I'm probably going to pull out a few more fabric pairs and increase my block count to 48 to end up with a more useful-size quilt. 

Libby will reveal the solution on Monday, but meanwhile she encouraged participants to try out various arrangements with their parts.  Each fabric pair's worth of parts will yield four blocks.  I'm thinking we'll end up with something like this:

This week's clue, a set of HSTs, was easy and smooth sailing.  I pulled a few more FQ pairs, so I'm working on 35 (or 36) blocks now ... I can decide later whether I want a 5 x 7 set or a 6 x 6 set.

 I'm in the home stretch on this RSC project -- a "red and blue but NOT patriotic" quilt.  Just need to turn the binding to the back during TV time!

Double Duty, twice

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for March is bright green.  I was really happy to read this, because my green bin is overflowing down onto the floor!  I had time to work on two different green activities today, and both will count both for RSC and also for another purpose :)

First, Libby at Life on the Hill blog has just started sharing clues for a MAGICAL MYSTERY sew-along.  I was already interested in participating, so as soon as I learned that green was the target color for the month, I dug out some appropriate bright green and coral fabric pairs to use in the mystery. The cutting instructions involve doubling up fabrics and went very quickly indeed.  And this week's sewing clue called for rail units: I sewed up 48 in no time at all.  I'm liking this one!!  

The MAGICAL MYSTERY will run through the month of March, and allows for lots of leeway and personal choice regarding size, number of blocks and time commitment.  I have enough selected here for 24 blocks, but I may add more as the month progresses.  (I'm really interested in busting that green stash!)

My second assignment for today was to use green for this week's block in the 1880 Sampler Sew-along offered by Temecula Quilt Company.  I'm using bits and pieces from my 1800s scrap bag for these 4" blocks, and some relatively-bright-green-plus-contrast pieces jumped right out. Even though (or maybe because) these are small blocks, they do require some attention.  This sew-along runs till September.

RSC18: February - purple

It's the last Saturday of the month already!  I did manage to finish this purpley top using assorted orphan blocks and filler parts -- happy to clear this group of pieces out of my UFO collection at last.  It will be sent to our local Patches of Love organization as a top with backing, and they will finish it and donate it to one of several local charities.

RSC18: February - purple

The RSC challenge color this month is PURPLE.

I didn't have much in the way of PURPLEY in my scraps, but I did find these old orphan blocks from some

long-ago swaps.   

So to get the PURPLE ball rolling, I made up some small 9-patches, also in 30s PURPLES. 

No particular plans for these bocks at this point, just doing PURPLE ...

RSC18 January - light blue

I've worked my way through half of the blocks for this little light blue scrap-buster.  Surprisingly, it's the last Saturday in January, so we'll be moving on to a new RSC color next week.

RSC18: January - light blue

I finally got going this week on some actual blue scraps!  I didn't come up with much in the way of very light blue, but these bright blue 30s scraps were happy to participate. 

 I cut as many parts as possible from each fabric piece for several block styles.  The blue parts will be combined with red 30s scraps to make an assorted-sampler-style quilt.  This project will wander along slowly, but at least I'm in the game this month for RSC Blue :)

  I also assembled another group of mountain sections for the Mountain Meadow quilt.

RSC18 - January

As I mentioned in last week's RSC post, I'm going to try to finish up some of my existing RSC projects before I start any new ones.

This week I sorted and counted the Mountain Meadow subunits I've been accumulating, and I have enough for more than twenty-four blocks ... so it was time to begin assembly!

I'm going totally random with color placement, the only stipulation being that two of the same should not be sewn next to each other.  I like the scrappy look of this strip, so it's full steam ahead to a top with this project!

RSC18 - January blue

Another year for Rainbow Scrap Challenge! 

The January color is blue.

This was just a taking-stock week for me.  I have four RSC block sets already under way: Mountains, Ls, Spinners and Lincoln's Platform.  I'm going to see if I can complete any of these before I start anything new.  Here are a few blue Mountains to get the ball rolling.
