New door!

Amazingly, we will have been in this house for four years next week!  The time passes so quickly, still feeling like this is new and missing my house in the mountains.  But anyway, here we are.

Yesterday we FINALLY had the front door replaced.  This is a project that has been on the To Do list since Day 1.  Everything still needs painting, but it's excellent -- such a soothing simplification.  The old one was waaaaay too ornate and formal and bright brass for this little cottage.

(Old door for comparison)

Sunday

We've taken possession of the new house, and go over there to putter every day: it's only a couple of miles from here.  Still getting the utilities sorted out, but that should all be done within the next few days, and then we can really plunge in.

The house is old and small, but it has such a nice personality.  Some remodel work will be done in the kitchen, and lots of painting ahead.  The rooms are all grays or gray-greens, which is the fashion these days, but not particularly warm.  I'm a soft white person.  Dark gray curtains everywhere too, and they will all be changed to white sheers.  Let the light in!!!

We need to start packing and organizing here also.  The target date for the moving truck is April 26.  This has all happened so quickly, it's still feeling surreal.  It's a cute little house with a lovely garden.  We'll be cozy and happy there.

And now for something completely different

I've been especially distracted all month because we've been working toward a new life phase: we're moving !

We absolutely love our house and this location up here in the mountains.  We've lived here for more than eleven years full time, and for six years prior to that part time.   But as we age, Tony and I have arrived at the moment when we need to acknowledge that we are quite isolated up here at 7000' in the middle of a national forest, and that the support resources which are available up here are *scant* at best.

This is a very small town.  Our local medical services are limited to absolutely basic first-aid.  Triage-type stabilization is offered, and then the patient is immediately sent 'down the hill.'  All types of specialized medical care are far away and difficult to access -- even more so during the winter months. Shopping is almost non-existent: we have a couple of grocery stores and hardware stores, and some souvenir shops, but not much beyond that.  We had a local K-mart, but it's literally empty of merchandise now, because it's going out of business momentarily. Any additional shopping involves a three-hour round trip, down two-lane curving mountain roads.  Fortunately, shopping by mail is a viable alternative these days, but our mail delivery up here is also sketchy: everything must be picked up at the post office with limited days and hours, and again weather-dependent. Add to all of these challenges the ever-present dangers of forest fires, blizzards causing impassible mountain roads, and earthquakes.  Fire season is year-round, and snow begins as early as Halloween.

We've been struggling with this reality for a while now, and have finally agreed that it's time for us to relocate somewhere safer: down from the mountains, into more temperate weather, closer to kids and grandkids, and with better access to medical services.  This has been really really tough for us to accept!!

So toward this end, we've finally settled on a nice little house close to son Dave and his family.  It has good living spaces, abundant storage, and a pleasant yard.  We're packing now, no small task after all these years of accumulating a lifetime of treasures.  The movers are scheduled for mid-September.  Lots of work to do before then, and lots of adjustment afterwards -- it will be a completely different lifestyle.  We won't have four seasons, the metro Los Angeles area is very urban and densely populated, the 'new' house will be very different from this one -- although I will admit that no stairs will be a Good Thing!

We're hopeful that our life will settle into a positive and safe and happy new chapter.

Home Sweet Home

We've enjoyed living in this house eleven years today.

Oh my!

Can we say discombobulated?!

This week we are getting started on a master bath remodel -- changing from a tub to a walk-in shower in particular, but also updating a decades-old bathroom in general.  This is a total gut job, a Big Deal. Related to this, we've already removed all the old carpeting upstairs, are in the process of painting all three bedrooms, both bathrooms and the hall.  Hard-surface flooring will be installed when all the other work is done.  So needless to say, every inch of every room is moved and piled up and dislocated.  It's going to be a long month!

On the Second Day of Christmas ...

Today I am grateful for my home.

CHATELAINE -- mistress of a castle or country home
I love being a "chatelaine" and I love my home.  Throughout the decades that Tony and I have been married, we've owned six different houses.  This one, by far, suits me the best.  It's a quirky place in an unusual location, but it feels absolutely right.  It's a good expression of my personality.  It surprises me to realize that we've lived here almost eleven years already, and I hope to enjoy many more years here.

Color, light, sound, scent -- I take pleasure in making my home comfortable and welcoming. I enjoy the ritual of decorating to celebrate the seasons and holidays.   I like to browse through our local thrift shops and garage sales, and discover fun accessories that enhance my home's personality. I make quilts for my home because they are warm and cozy and bright.  I enjoy soft background music filling the corners of the rooms. I light candles at dusk to brighten and warm my home, and to release subtle drifts of scent. I love to cook, and to have family and friends visit and share meals with us.

Tuesday

We are looking forward to a white Christmas!  We got about 6 inches of new snow this morning, and more is expected as the week continues!  We've already had just about 3 feet this season, and winter is just getting started.

A visit to Grandpa and Grandma's house

Rocking on the front porch

Grandpa helps with chalk.

Playing out in the gazebo

All the animals and cars in the water

Quiet time -- Play Doh.  Didn't last very long.

Drawers out of the card catalog.

Tumbling.

Watering the barrels.

More water.

And water for the birds and squirrels and rabbits.

At the lake.

With Mama and Papa.

A fun little winter project

I bought this fabric panel last fall, because it looks a lot like our house, including the picket fence and pine tree background.  It got tucked into a pile of "stuff" and forgotten ... and then it wasn't winter any more.

So here it is, another winter, and I'm taking another lap around my quilty to-do list.  I'm going to work on the snowmen panel this week, and see if I can get it into use this year.  My action plan is to trim it to a logical size, add a snowflake border to enlarge it, and then finish it with some simple outline quilting and red binding.

A couple of similar serendipitous 'red house treasures',
stumbled upon at long-ago garage sales.  These are both hung going up the staircase during winter.
