RSC20: August - purple

Well, I surprised myself today with some unexpected RSC progress -- I haven't sewn anything in several weeks!  It just dawned on me that the August color is purple, and that I only needed a few purple blocks to complete my Northern Lights block set.  So here we are:

I now have enough blocks to move forward with this cool-toned top.  It is intended to be a donation quilt, but since most of the groups I donate to are on hiatus right now, there will be no hurry about getting it assembled and completed.

RSC20: June - pink

It's been such a difficult week.  I've taken a few days to process all that's been happening around the nation.  I have no good answers or conclusions.  I decided it was time for me to take a deep breath and move ahead.  

The RSC color for June is pink.  As I was rummaging through scraps looking for pink bits, I came across a bundle of little blocks that I didn't recognize.  They were from a Temecula Quilt Company sew-along that was running in April, and somehow I'd forgotten about them amidst the distraction of pandemic-ing. 

I actually had sixteen little blocks pieced, but only thirteen of them found their way into this
 'Pink Lemonade' mini quilt.

RSC20: May - dark green

Our new RSC color of the month is dark green.  I already did my basic blocks of the month in green during January, so I'll need to come up with something else to work on during May. 

 Meanwhile, just for starters today, I did a sample of a holly block I'd saved to try in a Christmas quilt.  It worked out fine.  Done in different colors, I can also see it as a caterpillar in a bug quilt.

And I pieced up a few green 9ps for the upcoming lotto block exchange, just so I'd have something else green to share today. 

I'll need to come up with an interesting green project for next week!

RSC20

My rainbow-y achievement this week has been finishing up my AURA top. I worked ahead through the rest of 

the spectrum.

Two observations:

1.  Fabric colors look much different when they are sewn together into a quilt than they do folded and piled on the table -- colorplay was the main reason for doing this project, and I had some unexpected results.  I'm rating it a "meh."  But I am looking forward to my next bright rainbow-y project.

2.  I officially hate paper-piecing.

This was a useful learning project, but I don't like my result as much as I'd hoped I would.

RSC20: April - light blue

So would you believe it's STILL snowing here?  For the fifth day in a row.  It's April.

OK: so let's squint our eyes a little and use our imaginations.

This is the 'light blue' UFO I had slated for completion this month … but it's not really as light blue as I remembered it to be, is it?  It's kinda light blue.  It's more red.  Oh well.  It's done now, and that's a Good Thing. 

I started it three years ago as a red-and-blue-but-NOT-patriotic quilt.  The inspiration came from Home Sweet Home by Blackbird Designs.  I'll be keeping this one to use here at home for summer décor.

As my final activity for RSC March, I browsed through my lotto block collection and came up with enough blocks for a teal donation quilt.  It's all done, and ready to send to Wrap A Smile when we start mailing again.

Ships at Sea

As my RSC effort for this week, a TEAL UFO has been completed!  This quilt was started during January, 2019.  I was working on Hope's Journey at the time, and this was one of the extra little projects included in the book.  Somehow mine grew from the suggested 12" mat into a twin-size quilt.  I guess I liked the fabric colors as well as the block, so I got carried away. (!!!)  I need to stitch down the scrappy binding during TV time this weekend.  It doesn't have a destination, so when the binding is done I'll add it to my 'spare quilts' shelf.

RSC20: March - teal

New month, new RSC color!

We're working on TEAL and TURQUOISE this month.

 I got started with some TEAL Northern Lights blocks.  

And I made a couple of TEAL stars. 

As the month goes along, these stars will be added to a collection of teal/turquoise lotto blocks to make a donation quilt.

I also have a nice TEAL top that's been a UFO for more than a year -- scheduled for attention by the end of the month!

RSC20: February - orange

I worked my way through lots of orange this week!

First, I completed the next row of AURA.  The paper-piecing went better for me this month -- only about 25% of the pieces were wrong this time, an improvement from last month's experience!

I used some of my larger orange leftovers for

 half log cabin blocks. 

And for a few new Letterbox blocks, adding to an already-in-existence block set.

The cutoffs from AURA  became HSTs

This is probably it for orange from me -- we do have one more RSC orange week, but I don't have anything else in mind to work on.

Hooray -- I'm caught up with orange for a couple of carry-over RSC block sets!  I missed orange last year because I was sick.  I think both of these sets have enough blocks now to move forward to assembly.  It feels good to make belated progress!

Our February challenge color for RSC is orange.

I was able to get a running start on February's rainbow sewing because I had this incomplete set of blocks hanging around from last year :) 

I didn't get orange done in 2019, but it was short work this week to dig out the bundle and make the missing orange Dawn to Dusk blocks.  

And then I got everything organized and assembled into a nice little rainbow top!  It's 'small donation' size, just right to be sent to Wrap a Smile when it's done.

RSC20: January - green Aura

Here is my final RSC project for each month of 2020.  This one is not a scrap/leftover project but rather a planned rainbow quilt which will use stash fabric in the challenge color of the month.  I'm working with a pattern by Alison Glass called AURA.

I'm aiming for an arrangement of light to dark and warm to cool, and limiting myself to fabric I have on hand -- no new purchases.  

And the big challenge is that this is a paper-pieced design.  In the long-ago past, I tried paper-piecing a couple of times, but I wasn't keen on it.  I never went back to it until now.  It is still very confusing and difficult for me -- I'm hoping if I do these same sections enough times over and over, the lightbulb in my brain will finally flash on.  But meanwhile I am reinventing the wheel every time.  I'm counting it as a skill-builder for 2020, a personal growth opportunity :)

  

So here is my first row of AURA, in this month's RSC challenge color, green.  Can't wait to find out what our February color will be!

RSC20: January - green

I tried a new block this week for RSC, and it's a keeper.

The block is called Square Knot at Missouri Star Quilt Co.  I ran across it a while ago, and it's been ripening in my idea file, waiting for its opportunity.  Info and instructions are HERE; they're based on 2 1/2" strip sets, but I'm just cutting pieces from odds and ends.  I'll be using 30s repros and random ToT lights for these blocks, both of which need to be reduced in my stash.

I still have one more idea simmering in my mind for RSC20 -- hopefully I'll get it together for next week's green report.

RSC20: January - green

This week I decided to 'go green' by finishing up this block set from the Countdown to Christmas sew-along.  Sort of not an RSC activity, but there's lots of green in these blocks and I'm tired of this Christmas stuff which has been piled on my table since November.  So this Candlelight block set is assembled -- I may still add borders at a later date.  I have one final block set to work on.  But that won't happen until later: all the Christmas clutter has been bundled back into its tote tub and sent back down to the basement to simmer until summer or fall.  Or a week before next Christmas, haha.

I also did some green Broken Dishes blocks yesterday to add to a growing set.  I'm somewhere near 50 with these, and probably aiming for 150 or so.  They're only 4", so I need quite a few of them.

And I ended up green for the week with more

 crumb blocks.

RSC20: January - green

A new year, and we're off to a new start with RAINBOW SCRAP CHALLENGE 2020.  Our challenge color for January is GREEN and I found plenty of scraps to work with.

Last year, my Northern Lights RSC blocks became very successful finished quilts, so I'm going to repeat them again this year.  This is the block series that I broke down into 'warm' and 'cool' sets.  This month's GREEN blocks kick off the 2020 cool set.

I also revisited some Letterbox blocks that I experimented with last year.  My GREEN scraps worked well here.  I like these blocks and will continue with them through all the colors/months this year.  

I also pieced some small GREEN HSTs to add to my accumulation for Twilight Visions, a quilt found in Beyond the Battlefield by Mary Etherington and Connie Tesene. In order to make 24 blocks, I'll need 384 HSTs, and these latest GREEN ones bring my total up to 240.  I have them pinned into groups of sixteen (enough for one block) so I don't have to keep recounting them.

And finally, I put together some GREEN crumb blocks.
