A quiet quilting day

After a busy holiday season, I'm looking forward to a relaxing day at home today!  I'll be working on this quilt, which comes from some of my RSC15 blocks.  It is quilted, but needs to go back on the longarm machine for some corrections and additional quilting.  When it's done, it will be donated to our local

domestic violence shelter.

I also brought out this block set, and hope to get it further along toward quiltiness soon -- planning to have it ready for our Civil War Sew-along group scheduled to begin in February.

Odds and ends

We've been having quite an early cold spell the past several days, with temps not getting above freezing at all and overnights down into the teens.  Brrr! 

I just finished a UFO that I started way back in January for RSC15/Blue.  It's been hanging over the door to my sewing room ever since.  It has been donated to a local family who lost their home in a fire recently. 

 As has been the case for the past several years, I started out strong with Rainbow Scrap Challenge at the beginning of the year and then fizzled out in April or so.  I do have one other block set from this year that is close to becoming a quilt, but then there are at least three other block sets that will each need many more blocks before they're done.   Guess it'll be time to start planning next year's quilt activities pretty soon now ... probably including another go at Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

This coming week I'm looking forward to getting out the holiday decorations and changing the house from autumn to Christmas!

RSC15 - May/green

The RSC15 color for May is going to be

GREEN

 

 and I got off to a good start  this week with my monthly quota of rainbow reel blocks.  I only need one more row (five more blocks) for this set and then I can move forward with a top. 

My other 2015 RSC block sets (steps, mini bows, birds, crackers) haven't seen much action recently. My sewing time has shifted gears dramatically since I started doing work for the shop rather than my own projects.  I like what I'm doing now, but I don't have much energy left for puttering and playing after I finish each day's commission work.  And the whole picking and choosing for monthly goal-setting seems to be out the window now -- I just need to sew whatever is next on the list, period.

I got some PURPLE blocks finished last night:

 

They don't look like much on their own, but will be added to my ever-growing collection of step blocks.

 More than 100 already sewn, I think.

RSC15 - April/Purple

A modest start with RSC15's April color,  PURPLE -

this month's reel blocks. 

I have fifteen of these blocks done now, so I'm halfway to a decent-size lap quilt.

 

I also pulled out these PURPLE swap blocks, and some PURPLE 30s odds-and-ends to see if I might feel inspired by them during the month.

RSC15 - March/yellow

 

Where did this week go?  And for that matter, where did all of March go?  Time just keeps racing on!

 

I finished up our March YELLOW scrap challenge with some mini bowties and some crackers.  I'd intended to do a little more with YELLOW, but have been busy all month with commission sewing and some kitchen remodeling, so this will be it.

I got my RSC15 birds sewn up today.  They are more gold than YELLOW, but: oh, well ....

Meanwhile, we're having some remodeling work done and I'm rather distracted this week.

RSC15 - Yellow/March

 

A new month and a new color for RSC15:

we're doing YELLOW  this time. 

 

 

I started off with some YELLOW step blocks. 

I've been collecting these for a while now (in an assortment of colors), and have almost enough for an upcoming project. 

And I did this month's YELLOW reel blocks.  The "recipe" for these is Kona Stone background, feature color outer segments, and then one of the remaining spectrum colors for the inside sections.  These are coming strictly from the scrap bag, so the combos are "interesting."

RSC15 - Pink/February

One of my goals for February was to take a look at the Friends and Companions UFO blocks I've had tucked away since last year.  There were two sets of these blocks in the UFO tub, different color ways -- don't ask me why I started TWO. (?!) 

Anyway, the PINK block set offered itself for consideration, PINK being the RSC15 color for February. 

I decided not to make any additional blocks, since I'm no longer very interested in this particular color/fabric combo.  I just put them together into a small mat and finished it up. 

 

As separate blocks , the PINK parts seemed to be screaming for attention, but they don't look very PINK at all now that everything is together, do they?  In any case, I'm counting it as an RSC15 completion, and a February goal reached, and a UFO off the list!

Next month's RSC color is going to be be YELLOW and I already have plans brewing for that color!

RSC15 - Pink/February

A PINK and green completion! 

I was able to use quite an assortment of PINK swap blocks and orphans and sub-units in this one!  Mostly 30s-style fabrics, with some miscellaneous

 bits and pieces scattered in also.

This will be my RSC15 - PINK progress report for this week.  I think, though, that between this week's DOUBLE PINKS from Stars in a Time Warp, and PINK for RSC15, I'm pretty much PINKED-out for the month.

RSC15 - Pink/February

I got TWO log cabin runners done this week! 

 

The PINK one is specifically for this month's RSC15 color challenge.  I got the red one finished also, and took both of them to the shop before this weekend's

Sneak Peek Opening. 

 

 

I also sewed up a few PINK mini bow ties -- they will be added to an ongoing block collection.

RSC15 - Pink/February

New month, new color. 

While PINK and February are a natural combination, I'm not making anything Valentine-y this year.

 

 To start the month off, I did get some PINK sub-units done this week.  I'll be working toward a  PINK and green 30s sampler quilt and also a PINK log cabin runner
as February progresses.

RSC15 - Blue/January

It's the final week of BLUE for RSC15, and I have some completions to report.

 

First, I sewed up a group of step blocks in BLUE 30s fabrics. (Finally remembered to dig out the 30s scrap bag!)  They will be added to a block set I already have stockpiled from a swap last year.

 

 I also finished a BLUE table runner using the log cabin blocks I made earlier this month. 

 

And I assembled this top using all the BLUE chunky churn blocks I sewed throughout January.  This was a great scrapbuster.

 

And best of all: I completely finished this UFO from last year's RSC BLUE month.  Binding will be sewn to the back while watching Super Bowl this weekend. 

 

Next month's color is going to be PINK, and I'm ready to dive into those scraps!

RSC15 - Blue/January

January's Rainbow Scrap Challenge color is BLUE, and I have lots of BLUE activity to report!

 

First, a set of mini bow tie blocks ... I was sewing up a stack of bows to mail out for a swap, and I also made these extra BLUE ones to keep for myself

 

Then, a flock of BLUE birds --

 I think these are such cute blocks!

 

And a few "BLUE plus another color" reel blocks

Birds!

 

Well, how cute is this little guy?!

 

While browsing through this week's RSC15 links, I saw someone doing bird blocks which really caught my fancy.  I traced the block info back to Lynne Tyler at the Patchery Menagerie.

I really liked doing this sample, and will be sewing up a whole flock of rainbow birds for RSC!

RSC 15 - Blue/January

 

A new year ... a new round of Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

We're starting off with BLUE for January. 

 

I didn't have much sewing time today, but I did manage to get a few blocks pieced.  As always, most of my scraps are 1800s repros.  I'll have to hunt up some BLUE 30s scraps from that stash tub.  But meanwhile, there's plenty more in this BLUE scrapbag to keep me busy, so I can do lots more blocks next week!
