Celestial Dream

Celestial Dream
Well, zero quilty inspiration happening here at the moment. This bucket list piece hasn't seen the light of day in many months.  I'm going to pin it up on the design board and see if it might be time for some applique ...

Celestial: Step by step

Next decision: tentative placement of various background colors.

I'll definitely be working only one section at a time, not the entire top at once, and I'm even considering the possibility of quilt-as-you-go.  This is going to be a slow project.

First actual cuts, strip sets to make pieced checkerboard sashing.

And away I go!

Planning Celestial Dream

I spent some time with the Celestial Dream pattern and have come to some starting-point decisions for my project.

The original quilt is quite large -- 80" x 80" -- and has correspondingly very large applique shapes.  I'm going to scale everything down by 20% to make it more manageable for me.  Furthermore, my version will not include two of the side panels and will be rectangle instead of square.

Through my many years as a fabric collector, I've accumulated a beautiful assortment of woven shot cottons, acquired with this particular Bucket List project in mind.  I have every color of the rainbow in both yardage lengths and fat quarters, so this will be where I launch from.  I don't know yet if I'll stay only with these solids, or possibly get scrappier as things progress.

It is dreamy indeed to look at all these beautiful colors and start thinking about backgrounds and details.

Gathering Inspiration

A bucket list project!

I purchased this long-out-of-print pattern almost four years ago, after searching for it for years. It's been simmering in the armoire ever since.

My creative time, my skill level, and my spirit have finally aligned, and I may be ready to get started with it.

Score!!!

This quilt has been on my To-Do bucket list for more than 20 years.  The pattern is copyright 1995, and has long been out of print and extinct.  I unexpectedly stumbled across this intact original never-been-used pattern set on ebay the other day, and instantly ordered it -- and it has now arrived into my hot little hands!!!

My quiltmaking skills in general, and my applique skills in particular, have greatly improved during the past 20 years, so the time must be right at last for me to undertake this lifetime-level project.  I'm expecting it to be a several-year undertaking.

Thinking about colors ...
