Clearing the decks

Barbara Brackman will be running a new weekly sew-along beginning next month.  I always enjoy the projects she offers, as well as the history lessons she shares, so I'm already looking forward to the new series.

 

In an effort to get ready for it, I decided to finish the blocks I still have from her previous two sew-alongs.  First up was this set from Threads of Memory.  The series ran in 2014, and I've been meaning to get  it done ever since.

 

So yesterday I assembled the top: 

 And today I quilted it and got the binding on.  Checking this one off the To-Do list at last! 

 

Next will be all those zillions of star blocks from

Block 11: St. Charles Star

A rather high-maintenance block ... it came out Saturday, but since it involved both curved piecing AND unusual angles, I waited until I could give it the appropriate attention.

ONE MORE month to go on this series!! 

It's been running all year long, and it seems like f*o*r*e*v*e*r. 

 I guess I prefer a faster-paced series.

Hopefully next month we'll finish the final block for one of the rows and then I can start working on sashing.  Not sure if I'm going to do something pieced like this example, or just use plain bars of interesting fabric.  Info about some fancy sashing possibilities HERE.

Block 1: Portsmouth Star

 

I decided to sew along with

 Barbara Brackman's new BOM, Threads of Memory. 

The first block and accompanying historical article were released yesterday.  I enjoyed learning about George Washington's slave, Ona Staines.  Barbara's articles are always interesting, informative, and well-documented.

 

Since I have heaps of green fabric pulled out for my Home Circle project, it was easy to choose a few greens for this first block.  The sample quilt for Threads of Memory features flying geese sashing, but I might do an on-point set with alternate blocks of the green stripe fabric -- I have quite a bit of it, and it's been aging in my stash for **several** years.  And since this is a one-block-a-month project, I have until next January to decide :)    

 

And for all you sew-along fans, Barbara Brackman has just announced that she will be offering another sampler project beginning later this spring.  This next series will be based on Jane Austen and early 1800s England. Watch Barbara's new blog in April for
