Scrap mats

I've been clearing scraps from my work table, and I got three mats done!  That's about it for August.

Stitch Club - July

I just finished this mat for July Stitch Club!

The theme this month is sashiko.  The pattern I used is a classic 'asa no ha' design, but my color choices are non-traditional.

I enjoyed this relaxing and soothing stitchery technique.  I have several more of these preprinted sampler squares, and will definitely return to this technique to make something larger.

RSC20: June - pink

It's been such a difficult week.  I've taken a few days to process all that's been happening around the nation.  I have no good answers or conclusions.  I decided it was time for me to take a deep breath and move ahead.

The RSC color for June is pink.  As I was rummaging through scraps looking for pink bits, I came across a bundle of little blocks that I didn't recognize.  They were from a Temecula Quilt Company sew-along that was running in April, and somehow I'd forgotten about them amidst the distraction of pandemic-ing.

I actually had sixteen little blocks pieced, but only thirteen of them found their way into this
 'Pink Lemonade' mini quilt.

Enjoy more pink projects at

Meanwhile: onward -- I'm taking it one day at a time, living in the moment, and being mindfully grateful for all that I have in my life.

Sunday

Another odd little mat has been curing in the to-be-finished basket.  The little red cross blocks are leftovers from a long-ago block swap.  Bound, washed, and waiting for a home.

Shoofly Sampler

I finished my little sampler mat, based on
Temecula Quilt Company's

The project on this book cover was
 the inspiration for my quilt:

Vanquishing scraps

Earlier this month, while I was rummaging through storage looking for green scraps for Rainbow Scrap Challenge, a small bag of odds and ends came to light.  I believe it was the leftovers from my first Gypsy Wife quilt, which I worked on in 2017.  The bright colors in the bag caught my eye, so I left it out on the work table for further consideration.
The bag has been eliminated!  A couple of quick sewing sessions turned it into a happy scrappy little crumb block mat.  It finished up at 22" x 30".  The colors and bits remind me of Easter egg shells.  I'll probably use the mat on the front bench in the entryway for spring.

Thursday

A last completion for the year -- I'm giving myself ***extra credit UFO points*** for getting this one done!
I pieced the top last summer, as a mystery sew-along.  It was bundled away with wintery projects, and came to light again last week when I spent time with my red house/snowfolk panel.  Done now, and ready for January's snowy days!

And a little string mat to use up the scrap!

This is probably the last sewing I'll be doing until after the holiday activities subside.  I'm heading out now for my final grocery shopping trip before all the tourists begin arriving in town tomorrow.  These next two weeks are our busiest time of year
 up here!

Done!

I finished the binding on my new holiday quilt last night, and ran it through the washer and dryer this morning to get crinkled.   It's ready to go -- just in time for December decorating around the house!

And as I was sorting and folding the scraps and leftovers, I gathered enough small pieces to zoom up an extra little table mat.  I'll stitch down this binding during TV tonight.  This means that I now have an EMPTY project tub … maybe I'll start something completely new!

Sunday

I finished hand quilting this little TATW quiltlet.

It was a fun quick project from Temecula Quilt Company's newly-released book, Quirky Little Quilts.  I'm looking forward to puttering with several other ideas from the book.

Odds and Ends

I finished another Brimfield block this evening.  These go slowly for me.

Also, I was cleaning up the leftovers from this quilt, and used some of the scraps to make a little coordinating mat.  It's going to the hand-quilting queue.

Palmateer Point

This week we got the final step for Lori's

It was easy to assemble, and the diagonal arrangement was a fun change of pace.  I put mine together the other afternoon, and got my binding stitched down right away.  Started with some simple outline hand quilting, and I will keep this in my handwork basket so I can add more quilting as the mood strikes me.

Snack Set #2

SUNFLOWERS
While the window guys were occupying the house this week, I had a chance to sit in the gazebo and do some handwork.  These Snack Set mini projects are such a pleasant and quick diversion from the big quilts I usually work on!

Hand pieced and hand quilted: I used Victoria Findlay Wolfe's Snack Set #2 mini templates, and look forward to working on through the other sets.

Snack Set #1

I spent some time sitting out on the porch this week, stitching and reflecting on the sad state of world events.  I seem to be working at a different pace these days.

Hand pieced and hand quilted: I used Victoria Findlay Wolfe's Snack Set #1 mini templates, and plan to go on working through the other sets.

Housetops

A few weeks ago, Barbara Brackman was discussing fabrics at her Material Culture blog, and shared a charming little vintage doll quilt to illustrate her topic.  She referred to it as a housetops-style log cabin variation, a new term for me.

The little old quilt caught my fancy, and I decided to make a reproduction -- not an exact copy, just 'in the spirit of.'  I used scraps of the leftovers accumulated during last year's Stars in a Time Warp series.  My blocks finish at about 5 1/2", and the centers and logs vary in size.  I tied my version to capture the rumpled effect of the original.  Overall it's about 23" x 35".   A fun little sidetrack project, and now it's back to our regularly scheduled quilt To-Do list :)

RSC16 - Blue

UFO busting time! I haven't touched this project since last May -- the first row has been hanging over the door ever since, waiting for me.  Since this month's RSC16 color is blue, I decided to resume work on it.  But when I got the bag of pieces and notes out, I realized that I was no longer interested in putting a lot of time into the original project.  Soooo, this happened next:

I chopped the row into three short sections ...

... and then assembled and machine quilted them into this small quilt.

So far, so good, but all the leftovers and scraps were still waiting to be put away.

More puttering took place ...

...and another small quilt was created .
This one is a variation on Martin's Pennies,
from Civil War Legacies by Carol Hopkins.

It will be hand quilted in the coming weeks, and meanwhile a UFO has been conquered!
