Last completion of the year

Whew -- got this one done just under the wire!

This quilt is being donated to our local Habitat for Humanity chapter.  They will be having a new home dedication next week, and one of my guilds sponsors them and donates a housewarming quilt for each dedication ceremony.  This quilt is the one that will be donated this time.

And that's my finale for 2014.

Aurora Borealis

Suddenly, a top!

Once I took the string stars out of their hiding place, I became fixated with them -- I spent all yesterday evening assembling this top.  I've been sewing up the stars sporadically for the past two years for Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013/2014.  I think my original vision for this project was a bit different than this result, but I'm quite happy with the conclusion.  And I'm delighted to have a completion to report to RSC14, and to the String Thing Along group!

This will most likely be the last quilt project I do this year.  I have binding to be hand-sewn on a couple of quilts during odd moments, but the holiday festivities are commanding most of my time right now.  I will continue to make plans for 2015 in a back corner of my mind though -- feeling creative and excited about the future :)

Cascadia

A completion report for my Cascadia project,
 started last month as a
mystery sew-along from Lori at Humble Quilts:

If the mood strikes me, I may still add a bit more hand quilting between now and February, but if I don't get to it, I can call this done.

Thanks, Lori, for a fun happy project!

A little more holiday spirit

One of the guilds I belong to partners with our local Kiwanis Club to provide holiday deliveries to families in need.  This year's commitment was 100 stockings and various other items, and we'd already reached that goal last month.  But we just heard that 20 additional stockings would be needed.  So I did five more yesterday to add to the new quota.  Feeling like one of Santa's elves :)

Cute!

I finished this mini project earlier this week,
and just got the display stand organized.
This little quiltlet finished at 9" x 11".
I'm working on these with the Miniatures Club
at my LQS.

I'm already getting started on the next one:

These mini projects are fun and enticing.
But they certainly aren't going to be big stashbusters, are they?

Holiday logs

While I was tidying up some fabric storage tubs last month, I ran across the scraps from this quilt and this quilt, both completed in 2011.  Since the holiday season is approaching, I decided to use some of the scraps for log cabin blocks.  As the project evolved, a few stars wandered into the block pile also.  The long proportion of this rectangle was intentional -- the quilt will be used over the high back of a particular chair.  And needless to say, the scraps were not consumed, and will live on in future projects.

This is quilt #562 on my lifetime list of quilt completions.  I make utility quilts, not art.  The very great majority of my quilts are traditional pieced designs.  I always work scrappy, and I usually use reproduction-style fabrics.  Quilting in general, and my style choices in particular, make me feel connected to all the other women who have been making quilts to keep others warm, both past and present.

I'm linking to Scraptastic Tuesday.  Lots of scrappy inspiration there to enjoy!

Turkey Tracks

I put the finishing stitches into this small mat last evening.  It's 22 x 31 and worked up quickly.
I started it two weeks ago, as a take-along hand quilting project to pass the time at some events I knew I'd be sitting through.
Done, and  ready for November ...

Used year to date: 186.50 yards
Added this week: 0.00 yards
Added year to date: 104.00 yards

NOT a good fabric week ... nothing used at all except the Austen Album block I made last Sunday.
However, all the finishing handwork was completed on the tile quilt, so that project is officially done.

Fall finish

I started this scrappy quilt last month and finished it in time for autumn! (Binding done since this photo was taken).  I haven't finished very many quilts at all this year, so it's rewarding to add one to my "Completed" list.

UFO report

Yippee!! A completion!!  I started this one last August, and since it wasn't ready for Halloween last year it got moved to the back burner.

So here it is August again, and I've been determined to finish it up for this Halloween.  Experimenting with hex shapes was the genesis for this quilt -- my first project using those shapes and that particular wedge ruler.  It went well and I'd certainly do another hex project someday.  I will comment. however, that allover 'bubble quilting' is EXTREMELY slow.

Took the pic this afternoon before I had all the binding turned to the back, because my quilt holder was available then, but it will be done by the end of TV time tonight :)  And this one is crossed off the list ...

RSC 14 - More RED

Lots of RED activity to report this week!

I continued with the scrappy log cabin blocks I started last week, and got all the way to 'binding' stage on three runners for my guild's upcoming boutique.  These also consumed some yardage for backing and some batting leftovers, so I feel good about stash depletion.

I also got started on these RED apple blocks for an upcoming swap.  Cute blocks, huh?  If you like 30s repros and like to swap, click HERE to find out about our 30s yahoo group.

Stash report - week 24

Used this week: 2.25 yards
Used year to date: 113.50 yards
Added this week: 0.00 yards
Added year to date: 77.50 yards

Net used for 2014: 36.00 yards

Besides doing those yellow 9ps the other day, I accomplished a little something more this week: I quilted this UFO, one of the three that I layered and pinned in last week's stash report.  This buzzsaw quilt was started last summer, and was supposed to have more blocks.  But after letting it languish for a year, I decided that it was what it was, and the time had come to move ahead to a finish.

Progress ...

... a UFO from last year has been transformed!

This sampler project got stalled last winter at eleven blocks -- an inconvenient stopping point.

I finally pulled the bundle out and made one more block to get myself past the obstacle.

Played with sashing to enlarge the project a bit.

And I made it to the flimsy stage this week!  Adding this to the to-be-quilted pile.

I'm still having trouble feeling motivated to be creative. May was a difficult month.  I think I'd like to start something NEW and interesting in June to get the gears in motion again.

Calico Bricks

A quilt completion to report -- it's been quite a while since I finished anything!

I started this Calico Bricks project back in early April, thinking I'd get it done in a short time.  But meanwhile life got extremely busy -- we're just now beginning to settle back down into a more regular pace.  It's a relief to be returning to normal.
