Phoebe's Favorite

Well here's an accomplishment!

I started this quilt more than 2 years ago and finally got it across the finish line.  The quilt comes from a Barbara Brackman BOM series featuring dogtooth applique, a specialized technique from the 1800s.

My applique skills aren't very good, and my applique efforts usually turn out to be 'folk art leaning toward primitive' rather than formal and precise.  This is a rather casual technique though, so it turns out to have been appropriate for my style.

And that's another UFO done!

Thursday

Yesterday I decided to unearth these applique blocks 'from the vault' -- they've been aging in a bottom drawer for a couple of years now.

They are from an old BOM called PHOEBE's FAVORITE that featured a specific technique: dogtooth applique ... which translates to 'zillions of points.'  As we know, I'm not the world's most proficient applique-er, and I do get myself in over my head at times.  This was one of those times.

The original plan called for appliqued cornerstones and borders also, but that's not going to happen.  At this point I'm going to take the shortest route to the finish line.  The bundle of stuff associated with this project has been cannibalized several times already, so I'll need to make some new design decisions. I'm no longer purchasing fabric, so something here will have to work.  Not to worry, my stash is deep.

I'm definitely in the twilight of my quiltmaking career, and I've become increasingly pragmatic about how I want to spend my time and energy.  But I do have a LOT of handwork time invested in this project already, so it would be nice to Get. It. Done.

#8 - Eagle (but mine is a cute peacock instead!)

All my blocks so far:

Just one more block to go in this series, but I'm struggling toward the finish line: really maxxed out with applique.  If I do create the final block, they will all be assembled in a straight set 3 x 3 ... or I can stop here and do this on-point version.  My mind isn't much on quiltmaking anymore I'm afraid.  And therefore I find that I have very little to blog about in general.  I'm approaching the end of an era.

Anyway, it is my plan to keep this quilt for my own collection and use it during November, so I have time to decide.

Another block in this fun Barbara Brackman BOM series:

#2 - Bouquet

We're using the snip-and-turn dogtooth applique method for this series, making for casual exuberant results!

I'm getting started with the first installment for this free monthly applique pattern series.  The patterns feature dogtooth edges, an old-fashioned fold-and-snip method that results in informal points or 'teeth.'  It's much quicker and easier that traditional prepared-edge applique -- and fun to learn a new technique!

Here's the intro to an appealing new applique BOM

Dogtooth applique is an old technique that gives informal toothed edges to applique shapes and borders.  Very little prep time required, which is a nice quick change of pace from the usual experience with prepared-edge applique -- typically a very slow process!

Since I crossed the finish line with both Lancaster Diamonds and Trinket last week, I'm rewarding myself with this one as a new start.  It begins July 1, so I have time to get organized.  Watch for more dogtooth applique soon!
