Today's topic is "vocation",
which would be 'homemaking' for me.
I've had several different chapters in my life, and several different careers, but the identity that has remained with me right from the start of my adult life has been 'homemaker.' Making my home functional and comfortable, and making sure no one is hungry in my presence has always been one of my highest priorities. It's just what I'm supposed to do, as others are supposed to be dancers or firefighters or lawyers. :)
Quilt making is associated with homemaking for me. I make utility quilts because they keep people warm and cozy AND brighten their surroundings. I also make quilts to feel a sense of connection with the countless nameless women before me who were trying to keep their families warm and make their homes cheerful. I made my first quilt in 1968. I'm still at it!

Homemaking is a wonderful, magical word, opening doors to unexpected great challenges. It's an endless giving job, with so many satisfactions.
As a mother of 4, my main focus was to feed our family. Sitting around the table all together was very important to me, giving all the Opportunity to SHARE their day. No matter how late dinner was served (I was working full time as a teacher in a local college), we all enjoyed that moment and we have fond memories :)
With time, my homemaking extended to home comfort, economics, cooking from scratch, gardening and quilting.
Now, with retirement, I just can't cook for 2, and I'm Always making more "just in case" (and the kids know that :)
I started quilting 25 years ago, willing to keep my beloved ones warm, and making utility quilts (although quilting in our region is rather a hobby, rather than useful. There are many quilt shows, but few people are putting their quilts on their beds).
My homemaking was very much inspired through the Internet, and particularly via some special bloggers (like YOU, dear Jeanne :) … and also RHONDA HETZEL, an Australian Blogger at "DOWN TO EARTH" (https://down---to---earth.blogspot.com/2019/12/surviving-summer-in-garden.html )
That lady comes back to the basics, with so much inspiration and good sense. Her book is a MUST. If you Don't know her, she's really Worth a visit oon her blog :)

Homemaking, in all forms, is something to be proud of. We don't need to make our homes look like something out of 'House Beautiful' but as long as it's comfortable and welcoming we're happy. Quilts and needle arts in general are part of that I think.
