POPPY SEED BARS

POPPY SEED BARS

1 cup butter
1 cup powder sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup sliced almonds
12.5 oz. can poppy seed filling
1/2 cup sugar

Prepare a 9" x 3" baking pan with nonstick spray.
Preheat oven to 350*.
Combine butter, powder sugar, egg and almond extract until smooth.
Add flour, baking powder and almonds, and mix to make a soft dough.
Press half of dough into bottom of prepared pan.
Carefully spoon and spread poppy seed filling over base.
Add 1/2 cup sugar to remaining dough to form crumb topping.
Crumble topping over poppy seed layer.
Bake at 350* until topping is browned, about 45 minutes.
Cool in pan on rack before cutting into squares.
Dust with additional powder sugar to serve, if desired.
