I've been puttering with some seasonal-toned wovens, and I've settled on a plan for a small project. I'd really hoped to get to this much earlier in October, but here we are on the 28th. Sigh.
Anyway, I have two reasons for going ahead with this, even though the month is done. First, I'm enjoying the 'woven' aspect of these fabrics. Many many years ago I was a handweaver -- floor looms, the whole nine yards -- and these textured fabrics are taking me back down memory lane. A number of them are double weaves:
"Double-weave fabric is created by interlacing two distinct layers of cloth with the same set of warp and weft threads. Regular connections between the layers create a grid-like pattern or a collection of interrelated motifs."
Hard to put into words, but this is what the fronts and backs of double-weaves look like -- the colors change positions:
So this is partly a fabric/textile nerd thing. Wovens are much looser and more stretchy than normal quilt making cottons though, and definitely require a bit of patience and careful handling.
And the second reason I'm creating this small quilt is that I'm anticipating spending an appreciable amount of time watching the news on TV in the next few weeks (!!) and I'm setting myself up here with a nice distracting handwork project. My plan is to hand quilt this kantha style, with just backing but no batting.
Like all of us, my apprehension and anxiety levels are growing day by day.
